The Rant: My Thoughts on the 6/11 TNA iMPACT! Broadcast |
Submitted By James Walsh
on 06/14/09
iMPACT! was fairly well booked. While there were a few too many "give away" matches on here, which will be my complaint about every wrestling show so I wouldn't overreact to my saying so, I think this was a solid way to keep things rolling into Slammiversary.
Mick Foley is playing a strong character with great promo ability. While he probably should not be holding the championship, you have got to take your hat off for him bringing a strong element to TNA that I will admit I was wrong when I said he would fail to do. See? I can admit when I'm wrong! The things happening with Foley and Jarrett are interesting. I fear what the match could be... But, I've been wrong again about Foley, wrong like his political views. So, I'm willing to take a wait and see attitude.
It was nice seeing Tara in there as it was nice to see Shane Douglas... Douglas doesn't seem right without the blond hair. Oh well.
I strongly disagree with the booking decision to have Joe go over on both Steiner and Booker in the same show. I know we're pushing Joe to the moon but come on. Am I really to believe that the fat slob that rubbed the bacon grease on his face really can beat two former world champions? Granted, it was first blood. But, c'mon. I think at the end of the day, Steiner/Booker are still Steiner/Booker and Joe is still Joe. I don't think it really got over the point of how determined Joe is.
I have been critical of Mike Tenay and Don West of late. Them not selling the win as him beating two legends in one night could be why I don't feel Joe's big win(s) will have the impact it should. But, I must say Tenay and West were spot on other than this major, though singular, mistake. West has proven to me that he has a real strong grasp on being a heel. Did you hear him reference Bobby "The Brain" Heenan? Woah! Where did that come from?
I really enjoyed the main event. I am always amazed that Sting is 50 and can still wrestle better than people half his age. He'll never get the credit he deserves for being a great worker but when the dust settles, I think there are very few we have seen that surpass Sting in talent and charisma. I am looking forward to seeing what he can do with Morgan as Morgan could certainly learn from the Stinger.
iMPACT! was a far more enjoyable show than I had anticipated it to be. While I don't think it has the magic of the TNA promotion I fell in love with in 2002, it has a spark right now that I have not seen in quite some time. I think we're finally getting the right mixture of guys on the show, meaning not Angle in every segment, and as a result the shows are coming off better and better with new stars being made and established stars, for the most part, not being put out the pasture. Kudos to TNA for keeping me interested for a solid 2 hour broadcast.
