Would An All Hell in a Cell WWE Pay-Per-View Work? |

We are living in the age of self importance and self indulgence. If the 1980's were the time of excess in terms of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll, the 00's going into the 10's are shaping up to be the time of excess as in "too much of one thing is never enough". For example, how many bands are on tour as we speak performing "full albums".... I jokingly make fun of Judas Priest for going out and doing their entire Nostradomas album because it is new and most of the crowd are there for a wide arra of their hit songs and not to hear an album that produced none of those hits. But, a lot of bands are guilty of it. Aerosmith is doing their entire mid 70's classic Toys in the Attick while Motley Crue is doing the entire Dr. Feelgood album and W.A.S.P. are doing the entire Crimson Idol. It is entirely self indulgant. But, that is the age of which we live.
TNA brought this kind of excess to wrestling with the idea of Lockdown back in 2005. Much like we are mocking current WWE idea which I will discuss in a moment, we mocked TNA's idea stating that it was too full of excess and would never work. While it might not always produce the greatest matches and sometimes leaves important matches hung out to dry, see Sting and Mick Foley from the 2009 Lockdown card, it is an event TNA fans look forward to with excitement.
So, the WWE is contemplating an all Hell ina Cell match based pay-per-view. And, just as I said above, everyone is up in arms.
On one hand, a Hell in a Cell match should be the climax to a feud. It should be the end, the finished article, the complete and total hault of a story with a clear cut winner and loser. See the Shawn Michaels/Undertaker Cell match from 1997 or the before mentioned Mick Foley (Mankind)/Undertaker Cell match from the King of the Ring 1998., Those matches were the end of those feuds and respectively gave a clear cut climax to the story.
But, you cannot have every single feud end in one. Simply put, most feuds don't warrant a Hell in a Cell match. Just as a Steel Cage match was devised to keep outside parties out and to give the combatants a vile structure to use on their opponent, the Hell in the Cell was devised to do just that and raise the bar to our new expectations as we approached the turn of the millennium. In many ways, the Hell in the Cell was the next evolution in the standard Steel Cage.
Would an all Hell in a Cell match pay-per-view work?
Well, we'd remember it! That's for damn sure!
Story wise, I have my doubts. As I said, not every feud warrants a Cell. In fact, most don't. And, unless the feud is, as the old timers would say, white hot with heat, nobody would really care. There is no drama in a Cell match just for the sake of one. So, from a story perspective, it could be bad.
That said, there are some amazing young athletes in the WWE right now that I'd love to see in a Cell to see what innovations they could come up with. Evan Bourne, who is a clueless shill, would be one. Another would be Kofi Kingston. Neither, by the way, would stand much chance of getting a Hell in a Cell match for story purposes because they are not currently able to tell their story on the mic and are not in the position where a Cell for their level would make sense. But, can you imagine what they would do with that Cell if given the chance?
Wrestling is ever evolving. Sometimes it evolves and changes into things I don't agree with. But, you have to roll with the punches and accept that what should work and what has a history of working might not work because of changing times or changing crowd expectations. Would a Hell in a CEll pay-per-view work? A decade ago, it would not have. Today, because we have reached such a level of expectation, it very well could.
