Major Backstage Heat On RAW Lead Writer Brian Gewirtz

Submitted By Nick Noel on 01/08/09
The tide appears to be turning with many wrestlers as far as their desire to be on the RAW or Smackdown roster. There was a time when most wrestlers wanted to appear on Monday Night RAW because of it's status as WWE's flagship show, but now more and more mid-card and under-card wrestlers are wishing they were on the Friday night show instead.

Many wrestlers feel that RAW lead writer Brian Gewirtz is only concerned with pushing the same main event wrestlers, and critics point out that he's struggled to create new stars during his time in the company. "How the hell does anyone get over in two minutes?" one critic asked regarding some of the short matches that have been taking place on RAW.

There are plenty of fingers pointed at Gewirtz these days over RAW's poor ratings which are some of the worst the company has had since before the Attitude era. The common feeling within the company is that he wastes too much time with lackluster backstage segments and not enough time focused on in-ring action. The fact that he has little-to-no respect from the locker room doesn't help him out either. Of course, Vince McMahon makes the final call on all booking matters, but a common theme in conversations with WWE personnel is their lack of faith in Gewirtz's ability to get RAW back on track.

Former WWE, ECW, WCW and TNA star Raven was very vocal about his displeasure with Gewirtz in an interview with PWTorch.com back in 2003, saying, "What's wrestling about? It's about a bunch of sweaty men fighting over honor, pride, over women--sex, drugs and rock and roll. Brian Gewirtz has never been laid, he's never been to a club--he's a geek, he plays Dungeons and Dragons. The best work he ever did was writing for Edge and Christian when they were geeks. He doesn't know what he's writing about." Scott Hall, Kevin Nash and Sean Waltman were also all very critical of the RAW lead writer following their most recent runs with the company, almost echoing Raven's opinions.
