Chris Hamrick has been in wrestling since he was just a teenager back in
the early 1980's. After years of doing work with the WWF as enhancement talent,
he finally got his big break in the final yearof the original ECW. Now, 9
years after breaking into the big time, Chris Hamrick has some sharp opinions
on his career and the state of the business! Don't miss this one! It is a
truly special interview!
CHRIS HAMRICK
- The interview begins with Chris talking about the recent changes in TNA
Wrestling and the addition of Hulk Hogan. He voices his displeasure of Hogan,
stating that "I don't understand how Dixie Carter could put money into the
s*** that killed WCW" and he's not optimistic for TNA's future. He also says
that nobody will ever be on the level of the WWE.
- He feels that when WWF & WCW were having the Monday Night Wars, it
was a very exciting time for wrestling, but he feels like the most quality
wrestling & the hardest work from the talent came from ECW. Chris then
brings up Evan Bourne's comments about the new ECW being better than the
old, and Chris (along with all the hosts on the line) disagree whole heartedly.
He then states that he believes ECW is the way it is now is because Vince
wanted people to stop chanting for it, which is what James has said on the
show multiple teams.
- Chris saw ECW as his big break. He had been in wrestling since the mid
80s, and the first time he got any kind of recognition was when he started
in ECW in 2000. This then leads into a discussion about paying dues and how
the young guys don't know how to act because they don't have to pay their
dues nowadays. He tells a story about EZ Money and how his shyness was perceived
as disrespect and how that got him a bad reputation early on.
- The interview shifts into a discussion about tag team wrestling. Right
now, he feels that The Motor City Machine Guns & The Briscoe Brothers
are the best tag teams in wrestling today. He feels that nobody really know
how to put a tag match together anymore. Chris tells another story about
how he worked a dark match with Deuce & Domino and how they were completely
clueless on how to work a tag match. He then talks about how The Rock &
Roll Express did a great job of getting over the teamwork aspect of the match.
- Richie Steamboat really earned Chris' respect by working the Indy scene
for so long before finally signing a developmental deal with the WWE. He
feels that with his last name alone, he could have been rushed to the top,
but he did things the right way. This leads into a discussion about Ricky
& Richie possibly doing a father/son tag team in which Hamrick felt that
Ricky looked good in there and maybe the team would work.
- When ECW was getting ready to close, he felt that he was just happy to
be making money and it was an honor to work for that company. He said the
best moment of his career was when Tommy Dreamer told him he had a full time
job, and he did miss it when it was gone. He feels that ECW's magic will
never be fully recaptured again.
- Chris then talks about other companies, including some that he was a part
of. When talking about XPW, he talks about the pornstars being part of the
show and he says that the girls work really hard for having never been trained.
He was a part of Wrestling Society X, and he felt like the reason it failed
was because they tried to cram too much into the show. He then has a discussion
about CZW and the hardcore style that goes on there and he really doesn't
like it. He feels that there is a place for hardcore once in a while, but
some guys get saddled with a hardcore reputation like New Jack, who he says
is actually a good worker.
- The hosts & Chris then have a quick discussion about the film "The
Wrestler" and the hardcore scenes in the movie. Chris felt like they were
just trying to establish the character would do anything for a paycheck.
He felt that the movie exposed the business, especially with how blading
is done.
- Hamrick hasn't heard Cornette's rants on the TNA, but agrees with the problems
with the show, particularly bringing in Hogan. He was in TNA for a breif
run early on as "The Crimson Dragon". He says that the reason he hasn't been
brought back is because of a rib he pulled on Jeff Jarrett, which he feels
is an overreaction on Jarrett's part.
- He had a segment for WWE where he was playing a mock Triple H crowning
King Booker. He said it was just a one off deal. The only time he felt like
he had a chance of getting a full group of work was a Dark Match he had with
Sylvan. Sylvn got pulled from the Dark Match to work in Regal's place, and
the dark match was scrapped.
- When talking about the fans, he says that even when he was a heel, in the
North, they'd show you respect if they knew you were working hard. He says
that the ECW fans were the best in the world, and even puts over the fans
at Guilty as Charged, the last ECW PPV, and his match was with Nova, who
was mad over on the show. He does say that he didn't like the "You F'd Up!"
chants though because they were disrespectful towards the wrestler. With
the energy that ECW generated, its amazing to him that ECW closed.
- On his future, Hamrick says that he doesn't know. He doesn't want to "kiss
Hogan's ass" to get a job, but will continue to work on the Indy scene and
run his wrestling school where he will train young talents the right way
to do things.
