DVD Review: WWE Triple H King of Kings

Submitted By James Walsh on 03/28/08
Triple H is one of the most controversial superstars in wrestling history. As the title of Eric Bischoff's book states, "Controversy Creates Cash". So, it should be no surprise that he also happens to be one of the most successful wrestlers in wrestling history as well. But now, for the first time ever, hear the story of how the King of Kings earned his throne. Hear the story of the bumpy ride as he went from lackluster WCW performer to a staple in WrestleMania main events. Simply put, hear how Triple H became The Game, the King of Kings. There can be only one!

As a fan of this business for many years, I personally saw this disc as an opportunity to relive the memories I have of Triple H as he rose to glory. And, that is exactly what this disc delivers. From the classic matches he had in the early days with Marc Mero to his feud with Mankind and beyond, it is all featured on these incredible discs.

One surprising thing is that WCW is mentioned regarding Triple H's growth. In most documentaries put out by the WWE, WCW is put in a terrible light. While I would not call Triple H's remarks about WCW glowing, it was actually nice to hear him talk about and actually see his beginnings. I remember seeing him many times on WCW Power Hour and WCW Pro and thinking he had untapped and unbelievable potential. While you don't see those matches, you do get a glimpse at his sometimes forgotten WCW run.

His entrance to the WWE is discussed in detail. This also includes the Kliq which was a very interesting aspect of the disc. Triple H actually discusses in detail how he had to take the fall for the infamous actions of the Kliq in Madison Square Garden which has received endless discussion amongst wrestling insiders for eons now. That honesty surprised me. And, it really added to the integrity of the DVD.

The way Triple H dances around the issue of Chyna detracts a little from the DVD's integrity. I can understand why he did so... If I was married to Stephanie McMahon, I wouldn't talk much about ex-girlfriends on her daddy's DVD release of me... But, I think a little more honesty would have made the disc a more complete production.

The change in Triple H from the WCW days to his days as the Game are amazing. You really get the chance to see how being a part of DX raised his stock and then see the amazing matches he had on that rise with superstars such as the Rock. Amazing action that defined the Attitude era.

As a whole, the DVD covers a lot more of the career of Triple H than I anticipated it would. It is a very good representation of the impact the Game has made on the business over the past 14 years. And, with WrestleMania XXIV just a few short days away, I am certain we have not seen the last of the King of Kings. There may be only one, but I'd expect a volume 2 to come out in the coming years with the classics put forth by Triple H virtually every time he steps into the squared circle.
