4/15 Georgia Wrestling News, Notes, and Nostalgia

Submitted By James Walsh on 04/15/08

Kelly Farr, Executive Director of the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission, informed Bill Behrens, Chairman of the Georgia Wrestling Promoters Advisory Committee, that there were not “any substantive discussions about wrestling” at their April 8 meeting. Farr noted the only discussion was regarding the failure of SB 413, and that the “commission needs to think about what it wants to do about wrestling rules.” (Rich Tate)

The current listing of promoters licensed to operate professional wrestling events in Georgia is as follows: A Town Wrestling, Championship Wrestling Overload, the Georgia Pro Wrestling Association, Georgia Wrestling Promotions, the Independent Wrestling Network, Kingdom Championship Wrestling, NWA Anarchy (as Mad Dawg Promotions), On the Mat Championship Wrestling (if anyone has any idea who this is, please contact us), Show Business (Behrens’ business, although he is not actively promoting), Southern Classic Wrestling, Southern Extreme Championship Wrestling, Southern States Championship Wrestling, Ultimate Christian Wrestling, and World Wrestling Alliance 4 (as Atlanta World Wrestling Alliance). (Rich Tate)

Promotions based in Georgia of which we are aware, and are not currently licensed are as follows: the All-Star Wrestling Network, Alternative Pro Wrestling, AWA World-1 South, Deep South Wrestling, Down South Hardcore Wrestling, Flatline Championship Wrestling, the Future Wrestling Federation, Galaxie Pro Xtreme Wrestling, the Georgia Independent Wrestling Alliance, Georgia Wrestling Entertainment, the Georgia Wrestling Federation, NAWA Ring Champions, Power Pro Wrestling, Total Championship Wrestling, and Wrestling Beyond Imagination. It should be noted that not all of the unlicensed promotions are heavily active at this point, and in fact, some may no longer be active at all. However, there are plenty that are running at least monthly, and are running the risk of being shut down simply for not being licensed. (Rich Tate)

Of the larger companies, World Wrestling Entertainment is exempt from licensure at this time. Total Nonstop Action is not exempt, but has no events scheduled in the state as of this writing. (Rich Tate)

This version was the one recognized by the National Boxing Association as the National Wrestling Association. Elmer Snodgrass managed Elvira Snodgrass.

This is the last program listing credits for the Atlanta office staff for a while, and it still references Bill Hartman (Ticket Sales), George Burie (Timekeeper), and Ed Capral (Ring Announcer). Also in this program was a photo of Mario Galento with actress Joan Blondell. The Infernos had been the reigning Southern Tag Team Champions since they defeated Bobby Shane & Mario Galento to win the vacant title on April 1, 1966, in Atlanta. Ox Baker joined Capral and issued a challenge to Ray Gunkel, claiming Gunkel had injured the Cougar during a match in Chicago, and prior to that Baker and the Cougar had planned on teaming and chasing titles.

APRIL 15, 1974 (MONDAY) Notes: According to a bio found for Jim Carlisle, he left WRBL Channel 3 in Columbus to become a full time employee for Fred Ward. However, he remained the host of the “Columbus Championship Wrestling” until it ceased operations in the early 1980s. The program also remained on WRBL throughout the remainder of its run, so it is unclear what Carlisle gained by leaving one for the other.
