DVD Review: "Nature Boy" Ric Flair - The Definitive Collection

What can be said about "Nature Boy" Ric Flair that hasn't been said by those who either brown nosed him or that he brown nosed? I mean, the love affair with Flair that has gone on over the past 12 months is enough to make even the most uncivilized IV Horsemen fan a little sick of hearing it. Just when you think you have heard all you can hear, a third Ric Flair DVD set is released by the WWE. Woo! I admit, I'm far from the biggest Ric Flair fan on the planet. My problem with Flair stems from quite a number of things. One was the reaction I got when I started writing articles in 1997 as people bitched me out via email claiming Ric Flair was great and that WCW's success was because of him even though he was basically written off of TV at that time. That and because he was a royal arrogant asshole to me on the air. Now, don't get me wrong. Compared to Ric Flair, my accomplishments aren't even on the damn map. But, to look down on me when nobody I've interviewed in 6 years except him has? That makes him an arrogant piece of garbage... That is all without making mention of the fact that he's sorely overstayed his welcome in the wrestling business. So, here we go... Another Ric Flair DVD to capitalize on the reputation carved by a man who booked himself in the main event for years. I should hate this DVD... But, I don't. No matter how much I dislike the arrogance of his fans or his arrogance as a human being, as a performer, he was one of the best. Sure, a lot of his matches were the same. Sure, his reputation is built upon the fact that he wrestled a lot of really long matches and in the eyes of the "smart marks", long matches mean good matches. There are a billion "sures" I can write down here. The bottom line is this... If you watch this DVD, you will see why Ric Flair is the legend he is and why he is at least in the top 10 of almost any wrestling fan's "Top 10 of All Time" list. The WWE does an amazing job keeping the Ric Flair ass kissing fresh even after the earlier released Ric Flair DVD from 2002/2003 and the IV Horsemen DVD of a few years back. Does this DVD set change my opinion of Flair? Not really. What it does is reminds me of all the good memories I have of Ric irrespective of my personal feelings toward him. What it does is give the younger generation a look at why Ric Flair was able to have hour long matches and have them stay entertaining as opposed to some of the long matches happening on the independent scene today that are too long for the story they attempt to tell. What it does is point out just what I said earlier, why Ric Flair is one of the greatest of al time even if I don't like him one little bit. What it does is make me respect Flair for what he's accomplished... But, it doesn't make me like him. Any wrestling fan who has an opinion of Flair that is either favorable or like mine owes it to themselves to watch this DVD.
