Eric Shaffer Pays Tribute to Missy Sampson's Mother

By Eric Shaffer I was at a wrestling event (no surprise there) when I learned of the passing of Missy Sampson's mother, but I've been incommunicado until this morning and now would like to share a memory: If it wasn't for Missy Sampson's mother, I would have never met Missy Sampson. That may sound obvious, but there's more to the story than that. In 1999, I had just moved to the greater Philadelphia area for a new job. My friend Ty had also recently moved to the other end of Philadelphia for a job. When I learned that Captain Lou Albano was doing an autograph appearance at a local bar, I asked Ty if he knew where it was, and he said it was right down the street from where he lived. We met there and were chatting with a local woman who mentioned in passing that her daughter was a wrestler. My "Shaffer sense" was tingling at this point and a thousand questions raced through my head, but the most important one came out of my mouth: "What's her name"? "Jade" was the reply. At this point in time, I don't think the abbreviation OMG was invented yet, other than to refer to One Man Gang, but Oh My God! I had seen Jade wrestle in her first match several years earlier in a local high school gym and will never forget her entrance through the crowd, passing right by me. From that point in time, I had told friends I was going to meet her, but nothing ever came of it. So here I was, a few years later at a bar and just who happened to be there? Jade and her mother! I'm not sure what exactly happened next, but I think it involved her mother going to the other side of the bar where her daughter was and telling her that somebody here knew who she was and saw her first match. Long story short, we were introduced, spent the rest of the night swapping wrestling stories, and a friendship that has lasted almost 10 years came out of the meeting. Jade, of course, changed her identity to Luscious Lily, before taking on her real name, Missy Sampson.
