THE RANT: John Edwards' Affair, Hulk Hogan's Stalker, & Wrestlers who Leave the Business

Submitted By James Walsh on 08/14/08
It has been a really wild few weeks for me. So much so that I've not really had the opportunity to sit down and put pen to paper - or, as it were, fingers to keyboard - to write anything that could be seen as a complete editorial much less a rant. Therefore, buckle up and grab a drink because I'm ready to belt out some primal screams, folks!

TOPIC 1: SEX AND POLITICS:
This is a wrestling web site. But, I have to start with this. John Edwards, the Ken doll that ran as John Kerry's Vice-Presidential hopeful, gets caught with his hand or other extremities in the cookie jar of another woman. This, of course, after years of people thinking this exact thought, "Well, his politics suck and he doesn't seem very bright but his wife has cancer so that's something likable about him". Looks like he's not even as likable as he was... Nor is he bright to admit to it after the National Enquirer broke the story. Next thing you know, Willie Nelson will admit that aliens really did come down and help him write his music and Cindy Lauper will admit to originally having been a man. After all, the Enquirer has such a good reputation of truth-telling, don't they?

Here's the bottom line. If you put your ring on someone's finger, you are saying to them that for the rest of your life, you'll only sleep with them or with those they approve of if you happen to have an open relationship... I don't understand the latter and don't pretend to but I realize it is a reality in today's society. Anytime a man cheats on his wife, he should be ashamed. The same goes for the woman if she cheats on her husband. But, the question remains, is it our business?

Normally, I'd say no. I'm not going to say yes to this one because I think this guy is a political hack that only got as far as he did politically because of looks... I mean, he was a damn ambulance chaster before getting into politics! But, I do say yes because I actually watched some of his debates.

Democrats, this time around, seemed to fall back on gimmicks - You had the "black man", "the woman", and the cancer wife guy. When you find out the cancer wife guy is also the "plow the 42 year old political groupie" guy, you know why he never really stood a chance anyway.

So, is it our business? No, it really isn't. But, it is noteworthy because the guy built his campaign on sympathy for his wife... How can you not sympathize with her? She's married to this hack, isn't she?

TOPIC 2: THE IDIOCY OF THE HOGAN BASHING
Everyone knows I am a huge Hulk Hogan fan. But, I have to believe that even if I weren't, I'd be backing him.

The other day, I watched a video where some idiot with a chainsaw chopped up a doll made up to look like Hogan in front of Hogan's home. He kept citing that Hogan had said things he should not have said about John Graziano, the friend of Nick Hogan that has been left a vegetable after the car Nick was driving crashed. Cutting up a doll in yellow gear... That's normal.

The guy starts out the video by saying, "For those who don't know me, my name is..." Who the hell knows him? His mother? This "Look at Me" mentality is only aided and abetted by things like MySpace and YouTube. Don't get me wrong, I love these sites... But, why do we care what this idiot thinks about Hulk Hogan?

Concerning what Hulk said to Nick on a taped phone call from Nick to Hulk in jail, has anyone actually stopped to put the remarks in context? Number one, we only heard the parts of the call that the media found sexy. So, whatever was said might have made a lot more sence with some surrounding parts of the conversation. Number two, his kid was 17 at the time of the call and was in prison. I'd like to believe any parent would say anything to agree with their own kid in order to keep that kid sane while behind bars.

I know everyone wants to be famous. Pave your own path. I'm tired of people trying to suckle at the tit of anyone who is famous to get themselves noticed.

TOPIC 3: WRESTLERS WHO LEAVE THE BUSINESS
I wanted to make a remark about wrestlers who leave pro wrestling and, for the most part, stay gone.

About 3 years ago, Francine was celebrating the departure of Tajiri from the WWE saying "good for him" and I responded by saying, "You always seem glad when someone leaves wrestling". I was an ass. Here's why.

Wrestling is in your blood. No matter if you admit it or not, you're in this in some way or another for life. But, when you make it big, it can wear you down. If your dream starts to feel like a nightmare, you need to get away. And, I applaud wrestlers who do that and mean it.

It has to be tough to turn down all the money they get paid to face an uncertain future. But, it is something I really think is commendable. Chasing after your dream, in Tajiri's case becoming a newscaster in Japan, is incredible. We might miss them in wrestling. But, it is selfish to ask them to perform if their heart is no longer in it.

That's all for now. Hope you enjoyed!
