Unforgiven 2008 PPV Preview & Predictions |
Submitted By Patrick Kelley
on 09/07/08
Its amazing how time flies. The first Unforgiven was an In Your House Event way back in April 1998 with Steve Austin vs. Dude Love as the main event, but also featured the now famous Kane vs. Undertaker Inferno Match. It's amazing that all that happened over a decade ago.
Fast forward to 2008, and we have our PPV this sunday, and I have to say, the card is less than stellar to say the least.
The major problem with the show, on paper anyway, is the fact that there are 3 Scramble matches on the show. Now the scramble match is a gimmick match that seems to have people confused, but to be honest, I would give it a chance if there was only one of them. However, the Scramble match may or may not work, and to have 3 of them is just overkill.
On top of that, the rest of the card is fairly weak with the exception of one epic match, but lets go over the card shall we?
DIVAS CHAMPIONSHIP
Michelle McCool (c) vs. Maryse
- This is going to be pure filler and nothing more. I wish they'd have put the IC title or the Raw Women's title on here instead, but what can you do? Anyways, I'll pick Michelle to retain.
My Pick - Michelle McCool
WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase Jr. vs. Cryme Time
- This is Raw's entire tag team division. Sad isn't it? I really like Cody & Ted, and I really wish they had done something meaningful with them & Hacksaw Jim Duggan, but I guess they felt like having them get destroyed by Cena in a handicap match was more important. Anyways, I'm hoping for Ted & Cody to retain, but I have a sick feeling that Cryme Tyme is talking the gold, so I'll pick them.
My Pick - Cryme Tyme (Money Money, Yeah Yeah)
SCRAMBLE MATCHES: Now I'm going to cover the three Scramble bouts. All three matches have the same rules and they are as follows:
1) There are Five Participants in the match. Two will start & then every five minutes, a new wrestler will enter, ala Elimination Chamber.
2) The match will go 20 minutes. In that time, any pinfall or submission can be made. Whoever scores that pin or submission will be the "Title Holder" (for lack of a better term) and will remain so until either another pinfall or submission is scored or until the time expires.
3) The "Title Holder" will not be recognized as the World Champion. Therefore, any changes that occur during the match does not count as an official title reign.
5) A Pinfall or Submission can be made on anybody at any time. The "Title Holder" does not need to be defeated for the position to change hands.
6) Whoever is the current "Title Holder" when the time expires will be the World Champion.
Whoa! That's really confusing on paper. It might work better in execution except there are THREE of them! They must have a lot of faith that this is going to work.
ECW CHAMPIONSHIP
Mark Henry (c) vs. Finlay vs. Matt Hardy vs. The Miz vs. Chavo Guerrero
How did Miz get in this match and not Morrison? Anyways, the ECW title is pretty meaningless, and as a result so is this match. However, I do feel that of the three Scrambles, this one has the greatest chance of a title change, and I'm going to pick Matt Hardy to take the ECW Title.
My Pick - Matt Hardy
WWE CHAMPIONSHIP
Triple H (c) vs. Jeff Hardy vs. THE Brian Kendrick vs. MVP vs. Shelton Benjamin
Now this one is just bad. Triple H is going up against four challengers. Now would anybody honestly buy it if any of these guys beat him? No knock on Brain Kendrick or Shelton Benjamin, but up until a few months ago they were big time jobbers and lost almost every week it seemed. As for MVP, he could be in this match, but as the fifth guy, much like Robert Roode was in King of the Mountain this year. Nobody honestly thinks he's going to win, but having him interact with big names would be good. But there are no big names in this match aside from HHH!!! Why aren't Undertaker or Big Show in this match? The only one of the four that has any kind of chance to beat Triple H is Hardy, and even that is a long shot. Triple H is winning this match. I don't see any other outcome.
My Pick - Triple H
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
CM Punk (c) vs. Batista vs. Rey Mysterio vs. Kane vs. JBL
On paper, this is the best of the three scrambles, but thats not saying much. JBL has been beat by Punk like 3 or 4 times, Rey hasn't been on TV, and Kane has been beat by Batista. So really, Batista is the only true top contender in this match, and if anybody is going to beat Punk, its him. I think Punk will retain, but I wouldn't be surprised if Batista took it.
My Pick - CM Punk
Now lets go to the true main event of the show:
UNSANCTIONED BOUT
Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho
The angle leading up to this match has been nothing short of brilliant and is by far the best feud in wrestling right now. Combine that with the fact that you have two of the best wrestlers in the world, and you got yourself a great match.
Now Michaels suffered an injury, but Michaels normally works well whenever he's hurt (Wrestlemania XIV anyone?) and I think he'll work hard to make the match work, and Jericho will be able to work around his injury. If you need a reason to order Unforgiven, this match is it. Now as for a prediction, I'll be picking HBK to get the win and his revenge on Jericho.
My Pick - Shawn Michaels
In my opinion, Unforgiven is by far the worst PPV card of the year (at least on paper) You have only one worthwhile match in Michaels vs. Jericho, which to be fair might be the best built match of the year. Unfortunately, the rest of the show is loaded with confusing gimmick matches or pointless bouts. That's not good. But as always, hopefulyl the show turns out well.
