BLACK LABEL SOCIETY - Shot to Hell CD Review

Apart from the fact its Zakk Wylde's band, I admit to knowing very little about Black Label Society. However i was mightily impressed with their last release "Mafia", a huge slice of Sabbathy Rifferama done in the best possible way. Thus with that opus being so good I had to check out the guitar god's new release "Shot to Hell".

The first track "concrete Jungle" reminds me so much of Slash in his Guns n' Roses days, yet the song itself is more Alice in Chains.

The style changes for the second track "Black mass reverends" which is classic Ozzy with all the trademark Zakk artificial harmonics.

Ballad fans will be delighted to find a rather lovely number in "Nothings the same", which is heart-felt, yet certainly isnt wimpy. Neither are "Lead me to your door" or "Blood is thicker than water", both more mid-tempo balladic numbers.

Overall, "Shot to Hell" is a very good album. It certainly has a wider appeal than the last release, with the difference in styles on the tracks, "Devils dime" and "Faith is blind", which are pure headbangers. "Sick of it all" is a slower number reminiscent of a Guns n Roses ballad (and I'm talking Guns n' Roses at their best!), and the epic brillance of "New Religion".

In fact the album isnt so obviously "Sabbath" inspired as the last album. "Shot to Hell" reminds me of Monster Magnet, but Zakk has always worn his influences on his sleeve you will find Sabbath mixed with blues and Southern rock during the album.

If you've never tried Black Label Society, here is a very good place to start. This is an album which will not disappoint!
