WHITESNAKE - Lovehunter CD Review
Submitted By Caroline Walsh on 09/06/08

Way back before Whitesnake became a multi-million selling arena rock band and David Coverdale was filling his promo videos with his B-movie starlet wife, `the snake` were a quite soulful bluesy rock band that were light years away from cracking America.

1979`s `Lovehunter` was Whitesnake’s second full length album, Featuring, alongside David Coverdale, former Deep Purple Keyboardist Jon Lord, Journeyman bassist Neil Murray, drummer David Dowle and the guitar duo of Bernie Marsden and Micky Moody( Moody and Marsden now tour and record as Classic Whitesnake).

`Lovehunter` itself is really a forgotten diamond featuring not only superb musicianship but some of the finest tracks the band ever put to record, `Walkin in the shadow of the blues` is a clear example of this. Coverdale croons soulfully at mid range through `help me thru the day` and (oft live) fave `we wish you well`. At other times belts them out on more up tempo numbers like the irresistible `Rock n Roll Women` and `Medicine Man` with its God of Thunder style riff.

Of particular note is Moody and Marsden`s playing. Its a long shot from Steve Vai or Adrian Vandenberg. None of the playing is overstated and there is quite a liberal use of slide guitar and blues.

`Long way from home` the album opener was the first single, though it didnt crack the top 40 like the bands next single(`Fool for your Lovin` from `Ready and Willing`) yet it is a fine mid tempo song featuring some of the most romantic lyrics the band have ever penned. Of course most of the album lyrically is classic Whitesnake tales of heartbreak and stolen hearts, but some 18 years after I first heard this album it still remains my favourite Whitesnake release and I would recommend it to any fans of the band without hesitation, espicially as its now remastered with extra tracks at a good price!
