"The Original Playa from the Himalayas" Sonjay Dutt

Submitted By James Walsh on 12/01/05
In an interview that has been a long time in the making, Sonjay Dutt graces us with one of the best interviews ever conducted by The Interactive Interview.

In this 41 minute long interview with Sonjay, Sonjay holds nothing back as even this early in 2004, TII produces a contender for Interview of the Year.

SONJAY DUTT

-- As a kid, wrestling was always on in his house which made him a big fan. His all-time favourite was Ric Flair.

-- When asked where he came from, it's obvious really, "my mothers womb". When asked the question in a better format, Sonjay replies that he really is from India - it's not a gimmick.

-- Sonjay would like to say that he came up with his nickname, "The Original Playa, From The Himalaya", but in actuality it was taken from a stand-up comedian he saw one time.

-- His training was started off by Larry Sharpe. Sonjay was marking out, and went to Larry's school which was in a warehouse up 3/4 flights of stairs. In school gym class, while others played basketball etc, he'd go over to the far corner of the gym and do flips onto the crash pads. Before he ever did his high-spots in the ring, he'd practised them on crash pads.

-- When Sonjay started off with CZW, they were drawing like 1,100 people at the arena every month. He just wanted an opportunity to showcase his ability, but before then he'd had nobody to work with.

-- We then throw in an early Word Association with Cage of Death 5. However, talk quickly turns to Sonjay and Dan speaking about 'The Wrestling Channel' which is soon to launch in the United Kingdom. Sonjay expresses how he wished they had it in the States.

Back to the original question, Dutt says that the match really was what it should be. It told a story, and he wants to publicly give credit to the guys who put the structure together… seeing it on tape is one thing, but seeing it live is "really really nutty".

-- We then ask a question asked by Matt from New Jersey, Sonjay's thoughts on John Zandig. Dutt says in his dealings with John so far everything's been smooth, and he really appreciates him just giving Sonjay a chance.

-- The second question by Matt from NJ asked Sonjay's favourite CZW match. Amongst others, he enjoyed matches with Trend Acid, his Ladder Match at Night of Infamy, working B-Boy and working JC Bailey.

-- On the topic of CZW being 'Garbage Wrestling', he fully disagrees. The hardcore/violence is just a small part of the big picture. There may be some stuff which can be classified as Garbage Wrestling on the show, but to classify CZW as a whole as that would be un-true.

-- Sonjay says he absolutely loves Ring of Honor. He really thinks they've got their stuff together, and he wants to work there more and more in 2004.

-- About MLW, he says it's "a great blueprint for something that can take off". Sonjay was leaving the day after the interview for the past weekend's MLW relaunch.

-- Speaking of MLW, talk turns to MLW talent Teddy Hart. Sonjay feels he's a very smart young man - everybody's talking about him. Dutt says he really doesn't know the details, but as an outsider looking in he thinks he's a smart man and knows what he's doing.

-- Another fed that Sonjay worked for, NWA:TNA, is the next topic of discussion. He was not offered any contract from TNA, but has been there about 2 months now. He hopes to be back down there very soon, and with people like Elix Skipper coming in. He'd also like to perform in Ultimate X 3.

-- As far as gimmick matches go, Sonjay says he's never done a Cage match so he'd love to do one of those.

-- His favorite match in TNA so far was his 3-way with Chris Daniels and X, for the shot at Michael Shane in the Triple Chance Invitational. In addition, he liked his tag match involving Jerrelle Clark.

-- Dutt says that the involvement of X in the X Division was a different idea; it worked for the time they used it, and really helped put over the slogan of No Limits not Weight Limits.

-- The main difference for him, between TNA and Indy Shows, is that it's live TV. You have to scrutinise every move and every action, which is why Sonjay says he likes it so much.

-- He got the Hindu Press (a Phoenix Splash) from seeing Hayabusa do it on a tape. Lots of people in Japan do it, but he'd not seen many people do it in the States. And in terms of other people's finishers he enjoys

-- Sonjay then speaks about his training routine and diet. He keeps his protein high, and eats every 3 hours - eating the same thing practically every day, never snacking or eating fast food. People ask him how did he get his abs etc, and in his opinion it's 80-90% diet. You can work out every day, but it's no good if you're off eating double cheeseburgers. And sorry ladies, he has a girlfriend!

-- Another reader submitted question, about how it feels to be the most popular East Indian in pro wrestling. Sonjay asks if there are any others?? Excluding Tiger Ali Singh, he feels that there's not really any others which is definitely something to his advantage - he wants to use being an Indian as a positive thing, not to make him some stereotypical heel.

-- Next up, word associations. Sonjay gives his reactions on names like Chris Sabin, AJ Styles, Abyss, Chris Daniels, Rey Mysterio Jr & Hulk Hogan.

-- An impromptu discussion then ensues about Randy Savage's new Rap CD. Sonjay Dutt is the biggest fan of this CD ever. "It's great period, for anything. Comic relief, to jam to, to play really really loud and drive to the mall to pick up chicks". He says that he's played it so much that even his girlfriend has remembered the lyrics. Speaking of which, what's Sonjay's fav Macho lyric? "I'll wash you mouth out with soap" in the Hogan diss song.

Sonjay then does an excellent Macho Man impression (much like other guests in the past such as Jake Roberts have done)… and James ruins it with his impression.

-- The rest of the word associations are then spoke about including Jerry Lynn, Jeff Jarrett and Vince McMahon.

-- We then throw Sonjay a couple more questions. The first of which is, what would he say to WWE if they came along. He'd check his situation with TNA, but ultimately, if there wasn't anything else concrete in his future - he'd say yes. We really appreciate Sonjay's honesty with us, where guests in the past haven't necessarily been so. He hasn't attempted to obtain any dark matches or anything as he wants to improve on his look and his size.

-- When talking about what Sonjay would put on a "Best of Sonjay Dutt" tape, Sonjay says to find out what he'd put on it check out volumes 1 & 2 on his website, Sonjay.com, with volume 3 coming soon.

-- And finally, Sonjay.com is his official site, so for more information check that out. In addition, to book Sonjay for your show, there is a section on his website.

-- And in a rare treat for all listening, Daniel & James actually speak about wrestling and specifically MLW's relaunch and WWE's upcoming Royal Rumble PPV extravaganza. Plus, some big named interviews have been announced or already completed, and those too are discussed.
