Silvertide was formed in January 2001 in northeast Philadelphia. At first, Silvertide (which was originally called Virtigo) had four members: lead singer Walt Lafty, lead guitarist Nick Perri, rhythm guitarist Mark Melchiorre (who also plays banjo and the Indian sitar), and drummer Kevin Frank (who has cited the Who's Keith Moon as a major influence). The lineup was completed with the addition of bassist Brian Weaver. The young rockers had been jamming and rehearsing in the basement for several months when they started performing live in Philadelphia clubs, and listeners were shocked to hear a group of 21st century teenagers sounding like they had just stepped out of the '70s or '80s -- in fact, most of Silvertide's members were still in high school and weren't old enough to vote when the band was formed.
Because their sound was so unapologetically retro, they felt like musical outcasts in high school. When other northeast Philly teens were listening to Ko?n, Limp Bizkit, Eminem, and Jay-Z, Silvertide's members were admiring the Rolling Stones, the Who, Peter Frampton, Jimi Hendrix, and the Faces. When other high-school students were adoring Britney Spears, *NSYNC, and the Backstreet Boys, Lafty was being influenced by Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, Guns N' Roses' Axl Rose, and Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant.
If the members of Silvertide were musical outsiders in high school, they weren't outsiders in Philadelphia rock clubs -- by the end of 2001, Silvertide was creating a healthy buzz on the city's rock scene. This buzz landed the band on the February 2002 cover of their hometown rock rag, Origivation Magazine.
Silvertide opened for Aerosmith when they played in Philadelphia during a national tour. That local buzz led to a deal with veteran music industry mogul Clive Davis' J Records, which signed the band and released its debut EP, American Excess, in 2002. The following summer, Silvertide joined producer Oliver Leiber (Paula Abdul, The Corrs) in Los Angeles to begin recording their studio full-length debut. After previewing their songs on a springtime tour with Tantric and Shinedown, Silvertide issued Show and Tell in early June 2004. They also opened for Van Halen on their 2004 reunion tour.
In the Fall of 2005, guitarist Nick Perri broke his ankle and was forced to perform the remaining tour dates sitting down. For their hometown show on October 28th, Nick dressed as Batman. Walt was a hula girl, Brian was Ben Franklin, Mark was "something", and Kevin was a scarecrow.
Due to scheduling troubles, Silvertide cancelled all of their upcomming performances. In a statement made through Myspace, fans were told that:
"Some of you have asked about rumors of Silvertide cancelling their upcoming tour. The rumors are TRUE. All future Silvertide tour dates are cancelled and the band is going back into the studio to record their next record. The circumstances are odd and the story is long-winded but the bright side is that next time you see the band you'll hear all new stuff. We look forward to seeing everyone in the summer."
In February 2006 the band made their second appearance on the cover of Origivation Magazine. The photoshoot took place while the band was in preproduction for their next album.
In an interview on WMMR the band revealed that they had recorded 25 demos for the upcomming album. They joked about naming it "Kill the Coyote". The band revealed two demos named "Still Breathing" and "Hey Now".
The album is still slated for release in June or July.
