Recently, Scott Hall tweeted a snarky response back to a fan who wrote to him to say that the Allied Powers of Lex Luger and the British Bulldog Davey Boy Smith were his favorite tag team of all time. Hall replied, and I'm paraphrasing, "You mean the failed singles wrestlers." This caused the Smith family to react badly and bash the "Bad Guy".
Here's the problem. Hall, while out of place, is not wrong.
Before you fire off an email without a return address and call me every name in the book for saying the above, allow me to elaborate.
Lex Luger had done the "Lex Express" in 1993 and failed to win the title. That is down to booking, not his fault. He also did not win the debacle after the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania X. So, he was one of the most over guys in the company and yet, could not win the big one. Again, not his fault. Booking.
Bulldog had returned to the company after a moderate run with WCW and was not doing much.
So, they were put together as a tag team because neither had anything going on as a singles wrestler.
Failed singles wrestlers? Perhaps.
Now, Bulldog was not a failure and neither was Luger. I blame the booking at the time which was piss poor at best. And, ironically, Hall's buddies of the Kliq were just starting to reign supreme at this time. So, in some ways, it could be at their feet that singles talent that have a history of being over were not making it happen.
Regardless, the Allied Powers tag team was a forced team of 2 guys who were in a singles slump at least creatively.
