THE RANT: Lets Define "Independent Wrestling", Shall We?

THe rule of thumb for what made a wrestling promotion an "independent" was it was not on television. At least, that is how I understood it. But, that seems to be changing. I used to get angry with Internet writers that called Impact Wrestling or Ring of Honor "independents." After all, they have both TV and pay per view broadcasts. But, a recent comment sparked this commentary.

Flip Gordon said he hoped to win the ROH TV title to be considered one of the "top indie guys." TV, indie? Is it not a contradiction of itself?

With the closure of WCW and ECW, it seems anything that is not WWE is lumped in as an independent. Ironically, by today's standards, ECW would fall under the "indie" banner. But, that is not what the definition is. And, I don't much like it.

Though there are many viable actual independent promotions out there, see House of Hardcore for example, I don't consider Impact, ROH, or even MLW an independent. After all, they are on TV and TV is their main focus. That is the antithesis of what an independent promotion is.

So, all you guys out there working Impact, ROH, MLW, and any other promotion on TV... Congratulations, you're not an indie worker anymore. You're a true professional wrestler! Wear that as a badge of honor. I would!
