RD
REYNOLDS
-- Erik opens up with the introduction of the man we
have today the author of the hit wrestling books The Death and WCW and
WrestleCrap, RD Reynolds. The first question asked is what motivated RD to
write the book, WrestleCrap? RD responds with how a gentleman asked him to
write a book based on the WrestleCrap web site and RD was interested. He
came into contact with ECW Press in Canada and began discussions on doing
a book that had the exact same feel as the web site. RD says he wanted to
make it a book that not only appealed to wrestling fans but to people that
know hardly anything about wrestling at all. RD mentions that this is the
most common complaint he got from the WrestleCrap faithful and that is why
"The Death of WCW" is designed for more core wrestling fans.
-- The next question asked is why Reynolds wrote "The
Death of WCW." RD says it started when
-- ECW Press asked him to make a follow up to the original
WrestleCrap book but he felt that he didn't have enough material for another
one. But, he thought of what he felt was the most interesting thing going
on in pro wrestling and came up with how WCW went from the top show in cable
television to being sold to Vince McMahon for a little under 4 million dollars.
He feels, and the hosts agree, it is simply a story people have to try to
understand because WCW was just a company that never should have closed.
-- Erik then asks RD if there is a lot of material repeated
in "The Death of WCW" from WrestleCrap. RD says that they went over some
material covered in WrestleCrap but not spend and extraordinary amount of
time on it. He feels they made a conscious effort to avoid doing so and
considering he has yet to receive that complaint, he feels their effort was
successful.
-- RD, Erik, and James then go into a discussion about
current WrestleCrap such as the Diva Search Competition angle. RD says he
feels the WWE was very talented in creating an angle featuring attractive
women that a predominantly male audience did not want to see. James and RD
talk about how generic most of the newer Divas in the WWE are and RD comments
that there needs to be more distinctive characters in the female aspect of
the business as Maria and Joy and all the other Divas that ended up on WWE
TV even after losing the Divas Search Competition simply are there with no
rhyme or reason.
-- Erik then asks RD if he really thinks that the heart
of the Undertaker VS Undertaker feud was really that bad. RD says he thinks
it was. He says the Undertaker sightings were ridiculous and were much like
Elvis sightings. He also says he does not want to see Leslie Nielsen when
watching a wrestling show.
-- Erik takes that into the next question discussing
Kane. Erik feels Kane lost his monster aura when he lost to The Rock in September
1998. Erik asks when RD feels he lost the monster aura. RD says that Kane
lost it when he lost his mask to Triple H in July 2003. RD feels that the
Kane-Triple H match could've been built up much longer than it was. He thinks
that they should've taken a cue from the Sting-Hogan feud of 1996-1997, which
he feels is the greatest buildup ever. RD mentions the pay off of the Sting-Hogan
feud was a let down. James mentions that Sting said, in an interview you
can still listen to on www.wrestlingepicenter.com, that even he doesn't know
what went wrong with the way the match was planned. Bischoff went from Hogan
back to Sting and every time he approached Sting, a new finish was planned.
-- RD claims that when people ask him what was one of
the first big drop off points in WCW he tells them the Sting-Hogan payoff.
The guys then go on a long discussion of a lot of the problems with WCW such
as not having closure to the nWo angle and also some comparisons between
the nWo angle and McMahon VS Austin in that there was no solution where the
villain not only went down but went down hard.
-- James mentions that even when they were breaking
the nWo apart, they were sitting on a goldmine with the nWo Hollywood VS
nWo Wolfpack feud that never took place. RD agrees and the two then discuss
how after the nWo faded away, the company could have ridden the Goldberg
gravy train and instead of doing that, they beat him.
-- RD talks about how big of a mistake Starrcade 1998
was and how much the proposed rematch between Goldberg and Nash at the Georgia
Dome had WCW slip lower into the abyss because having Hogan win the title
with the one finger push and having Goldberg being beaten on after that incident
didn't upset the fans in a way that they disliked Hogan or Nash in character
more, they were starting to dislike the company itself.
-- James mentions how Goldberg went through batting
practice with Mark Mcgwire, Mark rubbed his bat on Goldberg and proceeded
to smash the home run record at that time. RD says Bobby Heenan discussed
this with him and said it was true... If it were the WWE, they'd have had
footage of them picking out a bat. Instead, WCW decided since it wasn't their
idea, they would not run the footage.
-- RD says it is amazing how many times WCW had something
people wanted to see and they knew the people wanted to see and, for whatever
reason, they decided to never give that to them.
-- Erik then starts talking about the better WrestleMania's
of all time and cites III and XIX as excellent examples. Erik asks RD what
he thinks was a tremendously booked WrestleMania and RD says he thinks XX
was booked very well with two men that hardcore fans really wanted to see
win, standing in the ring with their championships at the night's end. James
recalls when Benoit made Helmsley tap it, that it was pure Mania magic.
-- The talk then turns to Triple H. Erik talks about
how he disagrees with Hunter's politics but will not deny that he is one
of the best wrestlers in the game today, if not the best. RD says he almost
feels sorry for Triple H in that with all the backstage politics he may never
get the respect he truly deserves. RD talks about all the different talents
Hunter has and then James talks about how Triple H carried Michaels on one
wheel to a tremendous match at Taboo Tuesday.
-- The subject then shifts to ECW where RD says ECW
revolutionized the business but he thinks that the ECW pay-per-view won't
be the same under the WWE banner. Then they get off topic and start laughing
about Jean Pierre Laffitte and the Dungeon of Doom as RD received a Dungeon
of Doom T shirt for Christmas and wears it proudly. "It's pure
WrestleCrap!"
-- RD feels had the Undertaker VS Giant Gonzales match
at WrestleMania IX just been a stare down, it would've been great. But, he
does not feel the match was good. James mentions that the Giant Gonzales
body suit was hysterical because after he wrestled in it a lot, the hair
started to rub off and he appeared more and more nude. RD laughs and says
he actually wanted the back of the WrestleCrap book to be a picture of Giant
Gonzales from behind with his hairy butt.
-- James then mentions that Giant Gonzales was actually
on Hulk Hogan's "Thunder in Paradise" show in 1993. RD remembers that Gonzales
was throwing barrels at Hogan, "All I could think of was Donkey Kong!" All
3 then burst into a good 2 minute laughing session.
-- RD says fans should pick up "The Death of WCW" because
it is an impressive read with the whole story of why WCW went from being
the top of the wrestling food chain all the way down to the bottom and out
of business in such a short period of time. You can buy this book now by
