Booker T Reflects on Hulk Hogan and the Context Behind Controversial Comments
“You can often tell if someone is racist by the company they keep. I was always around Hulk Hogan and the people he knew, and none of them struck me as racist. About that moment when he made those comments—here’s what I think. We’ve all been in private, when the cameras aren’t rolling, and maybe said things that could make people assume the worst about us. Your guard is down, you’re just talking. I say stuff about white folks too. The comments get highlighted, but few consider the situation they came from.
Hogan helped me early in my career when I was an aspiring wrestler trying to get ahead. I don’t believe a racist would do that—reach out and help a Black wrestler. We weren’t close friends, but whenever we met, we always dapped up. He never looked down on me or treated me like less than. That’s the side of him I experienced.”
